My name is Gulmira Amangalieva. I’m a researcher studying the intersection of health communication, digital media, and journalism. My work examines how media — including influencers and legacy outlets — shape public understanding of health issues, particularly those that are marginalized or poorly understood. I employ a diverse range of qualitative, mixed, and computational methods, including grounded theory, thematic and content analysis, as well as statistical techniques such as regression analysis.
I enjoy teaching journalism courses, as it allows me to blend my passion for storytelling with the opportunity to mentor and inspire the next generation of journalists.
Before entering academia, I worked for a decade as a reporter covering critical issues such as social injustice, poverty, and human rights violations. My journalism career has been enriched by prestigious fellowships, including Reuters Institute Journalism Fellowship at the University of Oxford and Fulbright Program.
